Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is SmileyPDF really free to use?
Yes, absolutely! All tools available on SmileyPDF are completely free to use. We support the site through advertising, so you can access all features without any cost, sign-up, or limitations on the number of uses.
Is it safe to upload my files? Are they secure?
Your security and privacy are our top priority. SmileyPDF processes all your files directly in your web browser (client-side). Your files are never uploaded to our servers. They remain on your computer throughout the process, ensuring maximum privacy and security.
Do I need to install any software?
No installation is required. SmileyPDF works entirely online in your web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). Just visit the website and use the tools directly.
Are there limitations on file size or number of uses?
Since processing happens in your browser, there are no artificial file size limits from our side. However, extremely large files might strain your computer's resources (memory/CPU) and could cause the browser to become slow or unresponsive. There's no limit on how many times you can use the tools.
Which tools work offline after the page loads?
Most tools (PDF Editor, Merge PDF, Rotate PDF, Image to PDF, PDF to JPG, PDF to Word [basic text], Extract Text [non-OCR]) process files entirely offline in your browser once the tool page has loaded. The OCR Text Extractor option currently requires an internet connection during processing to communicate with the Tesseract.js engine and download necessary language data if not cached.
Why does OCR (Optical Character Recognition) take longer?
OCR involves analyzing the image of each page, identifying character shapes, and converting them into digital text. This requires complex computation and sometimes downloading language data, making it slower than simply reading existing text embedded in a PDF.
My converted Word document looks different from the PDF?
The PDF to Word conversion primarily focuses on extracting the text and maintaining basic paragraph structure. PDF is a fixed-layout format, while Word is flow-based. Complex layouts, columns, tables, special fonts, and embedded images might not translate perfectly. The goal is to provide easily editable text content.
